one strike; three down

Today a terrible lightning struck the house and three computers kaput. Two in the study; one which the kids use to play games and has lots of important stuff. The other one is used for downloading movies etc. This one is ok...nothing much inside. Then the other one which I watch vcd while exercising is gone too.

Thank God my laptop ok...I was on it when the lightning struck. All other electrical items are ok except for the pcs. Wonder why the pcs are so sensitive.

Church School Outing 2010

The Church School organised an outing to Shah Alam on 27th March 2010. There were 35 who went on this trip; aged 5 to 85.
We started the journey about 8.30am. We had Aunty Su helping out the tour guide with the entertainment. She taught us a few lively songs.

The first stop was the Sunflower Rice Factory at Semenyih. The children were quite fascinated to see how rice is processed in the various machines. It's amazing to learn how machines do wonders nowadays compared to the olden days when everything was done manually. The children learnt about the variety of rice produced like QQ rice, 'growing rice', brown rice etc.

We were given samples of QQ rice to try. It was pretty delicious. Some even went for three helpings. We were given samples of rice to bring home (500g) and the adults bought rice which is slightly cheaper than the retail price. Quite an eye-opening experience.

Then it was the Aquarium...a large place which has a great variety of fascinating looking fishes which varies from a few ringgit to RM16000 plus!!! From the eyes of the adults; fishes are just fishes but if we look through the eyes of the children, the fishes are amazing, incredible. Katherine saw some plants with worms coming out of them; had she not pointed it out, I would have missed it too. Then there was the turtle with snouts like a pig and the ancient looking turtle which looked like it had lived through the dinosaur age and tiny terrapins (labi-labi). This is almost as good as going to the Aquaria at KLCC where we have to pay quite a lot to enter.

The final stop was the Taman Pertanian Malaysia at Bukit Cherakah. The highlight was visiting the four season house where it was spring. A rather narrow place but good enough for the children as it was cool and there were nice flowers with a real cherry blossom tree. Some of the CS children posing at the Four Season House; looking good in their 'uniform' designed by Han Yun.

Then we took a little walk. The canopy was a rather short one. Not too thrilling to me...not sure about the children.

Along the way we saw chickens and a duck and turkeys all cooped up in this cage looking thing. We were privileged to see the duck chasing a chicken and acting like what Mrs Yap called....a grumpy old man.

Unfortunately there were many such cages which were left neglected like the above. If you were to look closely, you will see an eagle perched somewhere in the middle; totally camouflaged by its surrounding which were unkept. It is quite sad to see such a big place being so rundown and the animals not taken care of. For example, there were peacocks and peahens which looked quite scrawny, dirty and hungry.

Somewhere a little up a hill was the Deer Farm. Quite a few deers around of different sizes. We also dropped by what was supposed to be the paddy field to look at the water buffalo.

The best part of the park was to be able to see the porcupines this close. The caretaker of the porcupines opened up the place for us to enter and watch these cute but thorny creatures eating kuaci. Such amazing fellows...able to remove the kuaci from its skin with great skill.
By the time we left the place, everybody was quite tired. So there was no more singing on the bus as we snored all the way back to Seremban.

history

I was at a wedding dinner last night and sat at the same table with Mr Jackie Khoo and Mr Lim Kim Seng. Somewhere towards the end of the dinner they started reminiscing about the old days when the Japs invaded Malaya. Mr Khoo was eleven and Mr Lim 7. I was amazed at how well they remembered the dates and names. As a History teacher, I am familiar with these dates, names and events but as I don't teach the topic in such detail at Form 4 and 5 level, I kind of forget them. I suppose these people remember because they experienced it first hand.

Names like Henry Gurney, Gerald Templer and Percival kept popping up. They truly admire Gerald Templer whose changes paralysed the Communist ie setting up the chinese new village. Mr Lim sounded most upset that such a person who made a difference in the Malaya history should have his name removed from a certain road and replaced by local name.

Mr Khoo related how he met Henry Gurney's driver while he was doing his specialist course in Coventry. Now, how many people you know have met Henry Gurney's driver?

But at the end, they were disappointed with the British defeat to the Japanese. They actually called the British 'useless'. All the British forces was centered in Singapore and the focus was on their naval strength only. Of course when the Japs invaded from the north using the humblest for of vehicle; the bicycle, the British were totally unprepared and thrown off balance.

It was really wonderful to hear all these from people who experienced it themselves. Unfortunately, I was seated opposite them and the music was so loud that I couldn't catch half of what they were talking. Sigh.

an expedition to pd

A real successful day yesterday...Friday. Not only did we go for a date, I managed to bake pizza with the kids. In the afternoon, we went to PD for a hike and fishing.

The hike took longer than estimated. I think it's because we kept stopping to look at wierd plants etc. The person who complained the most was Dan. He was totally tired.

When we came down from the Lighthouse, we saw an ice cream vendor. Dan wanted to get an ice-cream but the vendor left before we reached the foot of the hill.

Next destination was Teluk Kemang where the boys tried to fish while Lyn and I walked across the bridge to the island. From a distance we heard the ice-cream's bell. But we noticed that Dan didn't leave his post to buy ice-cream. Probably he was too far.

A retired lady joined us later and she caught two fishes in no time. Dan was so so disappointed. We left later at about 7pm.

All the way home, he harped about not getting his ice-cream. We thought of going to supper at A n W so that he can eat waffles with ice-cream but after dinner; my stomach was so full. When we reached home; I wasn't in the mood to go out anywhere.

Now at 3plus am, I sitting here miserably because I think I may have UTI. I held my bladder the whole time we were at PD and I'm suffering now. Drank lots water but just keep wanting to run to the bathroom. How to sleep?

No pictures on the PD trip; to0 lazy to upload. Going to continue reading my story book.

piza

It's Friday and the holiday is coming to an end! I promised the kids that we would bake a piza together. So I had to do it today or it will never be done.
The dough being kneaded by the machine. Next time must remember to do two recipes instead of one. Not enough base.

After an hour an half being kneaded in the machine, still need to knead and add flour so it won't be sticky and easier to handle.

I cut the dough into half to make two pizzas so that Dan can put toppings that he likes. I took out the cutter which has not been used for years. Brought it all the way home from Vancouver...very helpful.

Dan was so intrigued by it that he had to take a picture of it.

Dumping the ingredients on the base. There is bacon, chicken, tomatoes, olives and mushrooms. Would have tasted better had there been capsicum and pineapples but Lyn dislikes capsicum and Dan dislikes pineapples.

Topped with mozarella cheese.

The final product....oozing with sauce and tomato.
Must remember to bake the base for about 10mins before putting the topping. Then the base would be nicer. One recipe is definitely not enough for us. The kids love the pizza and we finished everything.

paktoh 2

This morning KC and I went for our monthly date. I remembered to bring my camera today. It was quite hot by the time we reached there because we stopped for breakfast. Quite noisy also as there were workers around cutting grass and the crows were real loud.

We finally settled under a tree with a table like this. Quite cooling here and able to view the lake.

Brought my Bible along to read together. This Bible was given to me by the kids one Christmas (EE helped them in the purchase).

While flicking through the Bible I saw this long forgotten note. It was written by Dan one night while I was watching TV. He folded it into a paper plane and threw it down from upstairs.

The passage we were reading from Galatians 1:6-12. A reminder to us to know God's Word and be firm in it and not go around interpreting it as we like to suit our whims and fancies.

The camera helped me a lot in slowing down and looking around at things. I took my time to look for sights that I would normally take for granted. There was a loud crow above us...I managed to capture it in pictures. Look .. the beak is open...making its presence known.

Then I noticed the position of the sun and thought it would be nice to catch our shadow.

Later we went to a gazebo to pray with our eyes open so that we could enjoy nature. From where we stood, I saw this pretty picture; flowers and greens and reflections on the lake. Real nice and quaint.

A terrapin and a fish swimming together.

We were quite astonished to see these fishes; mouth wide open at the surface of the water. There were quite a number around.
As usual we ended our date with some conclusions. This time was on self discipline/focus in what we do and values that we want to hold together as a family and we listed out 4 values:
i. be God fearing
ii. truthful/integrity
iii. give our best in whatever we do
iv. stick together as a family through thick and thin
Wonderful time again...praise God.

lovely songs...

Agnes Chan

She was my favourite singer when I was young. Baby face and baby voice. Didn't know she holds a phd.

Ing, you must check her out. Memories again.

Teresa Teng

Somebody sent me this website containing Teresa Teng's songs. As I listen to them now, it's like going down memory lane. Both my brothers used to listen to her songs a lot. After I moved to Sban, my FIL would also listen to her songs. It's been a long time.

orange cappucino bread

Betty Crocker's bread book has lots of mouth watering recipes and this is one of them. The problem with the recipes are they are not totally accurate. Need to check the dough to see if it is wet or dry etc. So the best time to experiment on the recipes is holiday. Today I tried this recipe...used nescafe; 1 whole tablespoon and the peel of one orange...can add more. The recipe needs extra water; at least 2 tablespoon.

Beautiful loaf of bread....the smell is great too. I fell in love with it immediately when I sliced it.
The bread was ready during dinner time. I couldn't resist temptation; just had to try it. So I slice half of the slice in the picture above (didn't want to eat the whole slice and spoil my appetite for dinner) and spread St Dalfour's ginger and orange jam. It was heavenly. A little zest from the orange peel and slight bitterish taste from the coffee but the coffee taste is not strong. Maybe should use other brand coffee granule??
This is the second recipe from Betty Crocker which I really like. The first is the chocolate walnut bread. Unfortunately I still need to buy Gardenia bread because Dan can't take coffee (he'll surely complain it's bitter) and mother will complain it's too heaty. Sigh. Just can't please everybody. Ma enjoyed the chocolate walnut bread but she was badly constipated. So I had to buy Gardenia bread for her.

hardworking bug

It's the first day of school holiday and I woke up as usual; 5.30am, to prepare food for KC to take to work. I was suddenly bitten by the hardworking bug. I am basically a pretty lazy person, usually I would go back to sleep after KC leaves and drag my feet through the day wishing that I don't have to lift a single finger and the house is clean.

After KC left, I actually swept the floor! I don't do this on a weekday esp early of the week as Mila cleans the house on Saturdays. Infact for the whole of this year; I think this is the first time I swept the floor.

Then I removed the sofa covers and threw them into the washing machine. I usually wash the covers twice a year; June break and December break. This is a bit out of the norm.

Then I made french toast before calling Lyn up at 7am. She has choir practice and also music theory exam held in our school.

After leaving Lyn is school I went to market and bought all the things that I would like to eat. I hate cooking and eating what I cook. Today, I bought stingray (to bake in sambal sauce), apple cucumber and turnip (these two takes a long time to cut because need to be real fine and I don't have time to cut them fine on a normal working day)....well I thought since it's holiday, I should cook what I want to eat and not the normal dishes which I am totally sick of. Again.....the bug has got me into the mood.

I boiled a pot of scallop oyster mushroom soup to eat with misuah for lunch. I have two types of misuah this time; the fine foochow misuah and the thick hinghwa misuah.

I even fried tikueh...kuih bakul. I used to give away the kuih bakul which my eldest sister gives me every year. This year, decided to cut them and put in the fridge and fry whenever am in the mood. Today is THAT day when the mood is right.

Look; I even steam corns!! Corn usually goes into the soup. I rarely steam corn on its own. Today I was thinking.....all of us love corn except Lyn. Why wait till I boil ABC soup? Just steam and eat!

The sofa covers that are out in the sun. Thank God the sun came out though it looked kind of gloomy earlier.

I'm waiting for the lazy bug to attack any minute now. Of course I will succumb to it...it's holiday; why on earth should I be working so hard.

foodtiam coffee

To celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary, we decided to try out one of the many restaurants around City Park, Seremban 2. After circling around, we picked this place, Foodtiam Coffee. There are quite a few of such kopitiam around. This is the biggest, three shoplots; one main like a kopitiam, this is the centre lot (probably the smoking section) and the next lot is air-cond. We chose this as it is empty.

The ambience is cosy and spacious. The tables are marbled top and quite kopitiam looking.

The CNY deco has not been taken down yet.

The white coffee. I drink my share of coffee whenever I eat out and white coffee has always been my choice. The coffee is rich and slightly different in taste from the Old Town White Coffee. Nice.

Food in kopitiams are almost the same. Didn't know what to eat. This is otak-otak fried rice. Oily but nice.

I had nasi lemak with rendang chicken. The nasi wasn't lemak enough. The taste of spice did not get into the chicken; so the chicken was quite bland without the rendang. Overall, ok ok.

Tempura calamari rings. I thought I ordered onion rings. But no regrets. Very crispy and nice. The nicest. Well that was about all we could eat. Glad we didn't order more.

After 16 years, this is how we look. Aged quite a lot compared to the wedding photos 16 years ago where we looked so fresh and green. KC has much lesser hair now and I have grown so much rounder. That's just the physical side of us. But I must say, we have matured in many ways in our relationship and definitely been blessed mightily by God. The highlights of our 16 years are Lyn and Dan.

who inspires who??

Today was D-day....the SPM results!!!! I was as excited as the girls. Before the results were given out, I sneaked into the Room and checked their results.

Later a few of the girls came to see me and told me that I inspired them to work hard for History. Well, I must say that it is reciprocal. I was very much inspired by many of the girls last year to give them my best. Seeing their enthusiasm, interest, the gleam of intelligence and understanding in their eyes spurred me on.

I thrive on the positive energy that exudes from them. So when they responded to me positively; I was able to forget all my tiredness and weariness in my job and just focus on giving them my best. I suppose as I poured my heart into their lives, they responded by doing their best in their studies. So... it goes both ways.

To all the girls who inspired me to be a better teacher...thank you so much!!!

rocking in the car

Last Saturday, we left Ikea about 10.30pm and the traffic was still crawling. We were behind a Kelisa which was packed with youngsters (probably bout 17-20yrs old). The music was booming away. Suddenly the little car started bouncing. Oh my...the boys in the car were dancing and singing to the music. We could see the bodies swaying, the hands moving and they were definitely bouncing in the car.

What horrors if the mother of the driver see what his son and friends were doing to her car. There goes the suspension.

It's pretty worrisome seeing youngsters like this and to know that one day my kids will reach that age too. Will they bounce my car up and down with their friends? Must have a written contract before they lay their hands on the car.

ninja grandmas

.....that's how Elizabeth called her mom and two other ladies who attacked a snatch thief.

It was in the morning and these three women aged 50plus to 70plus went for their usual walk. A motorbike came along and the pillion rider got off and snatched one of the ladies' 'tali'. The other two older women reacted real fast with their sticks and screams. Elizabeth's mom whacked the man with her stick. Wow....for a woman aged 75 she was real fast and strong.

The useless man fell and crawled to the motorbike and rode off leaving the women shaky. I suppose in the moment of danger; they were all ready to defend and protect each other; forgetting whatever fear there is.

Is this how the society will be? The young robbing from the old and helpless? I hope the whacking put the two men to shame. Serve them right and kudos to the three ninja grannies!!!!!!

By the way, the police force just had their pay increment. Is that to enable them to relax and enjoy life more or to spur them to better service? Maybe we should just train all the retirees to be ninjas and defenders of the neighbourhood.
